S. Portia Steele Memorial Scholarships

Portia had a keen interest in Creative Writing and always favored that field of endeavor. To continue her work, our Foundation has endowed an annual scholarship through the auspices of the Jewish Family and Children's Services (JFCS) in San Francisco. JFCS, with 150 years of service in the Bay Area, has a wide variety of scholarships available thru its Grants and Financial Aid Center in San Francisco.

One scholarship a year will be awarded to a woman seeking a graduate or under-graduate degree at an accredited college or university. While the exact amount of the Scholarship will vary from year to year, the grant will be no less than $500. The qualifying student will be awarded the scholarship based on merit and financial need. We are also pleased that the scholarship in Portia's name will run in perpetuity.

The ideal applicant will meet these requirements:

  • Achieve and maintain at least a 3.5 grade-point average (GPA).
  • Demonstrate financial need.
  • The applicant is seeking, and intends to complete, a Baccalaureate or Masters Degree in a field of their choice.
  • The applicant must be a woman currently enrolled in good standing at an accredited College or University.

For more information, please contact the Grants and Financial Aid Center of the San Francisco , Peninsula and Marin County office of Jewish Family and Children's Services. Their phone: (415) 449-1226 or Email: EricS@jfcs.org.

Thank you for your interest in our scholarships, and good luck!
